Cross-Stitch Beads Metallic Braid Variegated Thread

Stitching with Variegated Thread

When using variegated floss, how to work the x's is up to you.  If you want a continuous flow of color, like a rainbow, complete one x at a time.  If you want a more homogenous mix of color, work x's in the traditional manner.  Try both ways – each one is appropriate in certain circumstances and your own personal preferences should always be your guide.

With any variegated floss, you will get a striped effect if you work your stitches in a linear fashion.  In some cases, that might be the effect you want.  However, if you want to lessen this effect, here are some suggestions to minimize stripes:

bullet

if working with multiple plies, reverse strands or use unmatched strands

bullet

work every other stitch, then go back and insert the remaining stitches

bullet

if you have a large area to fill and the stitch pattern does not automatically distribute the color to your liking, work in small irregular areas until the entire space is filled

bullet

for a different effect, follow the above suggestions, but divide the space into an imaginary gridwork of geometric shapes, such as diamonds and squares, and fill each section

If you want to continue your stitching with the same color that you just finished in your needle, try reversing the strands each time you thread your needle.  However, there is really no need to control color – it is far more exciting to just let the colors do their thing while you select your threads at random without regard for the “direction” of the color.

To recreate the inconsistencies in the way the color in stained glass appears, I stitch each back-stitched section separately and sometimes alternate the direction of the stitches (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, circular).  If you want even more variation in color, you can further visually divide these sections into smaller areas to change the color variation.

When working with variegated threads, keep in mind that there are no rules.

Use your own imagination, experiment, and let the needs of the piece you are stitching be your guide.

Most importantly,… BE CREATIVE -- HAVE FUN!!!
